In "Wake up, this is Joburg" writer and urban planner Tanya Zack and photographer Mark Lewis tell the stories of ten ordinary, interesting, odd or outrageous inhabitants of Johannesburg. "S'kop", the first book is the series, presents the butchers, traders and entrepreneurs who work in the basement of the abandoned and derelict Kazerne taxi rank, demolished in 2013."S'kop" is short for "isiKop", "the head", in a hybrid Zulu/Afrikaans slang.

The Portfolio Masterclass, originated in 2008 by the curator Simon Njami in partnership with the Goethe-Institut, invited upcoming photographers on the African continent to photographic festivals to consider questions relevant to contemporary African photography. The workshops were led by different curators. This book is an attempt to translate these sessions into book form and offers short quotes on various topics, organised alphabetically, by some of the mentors: Clare Butcher, Simon Njami, Sean O'Toole, Gerhard Schoeman, Monique Pelser, Akinbode Akinbiyi, Frederique Chapius, Katrin Peters-Klaphake and Jared Thorne.
