Martinus Johannes "Tinus" de Jongh was born in Amsterdam in 1885. Self-taught, he originally worked as a decorator before choosing to paint full-time. Soon after moving to South Africa in 1921 he began to paint Cape landscapes, which became very popular. He died in Bloemfontein in 1942.
