Photojournalist Ilan Godfrey won the 2012 Ernest Cole Award with this body of work documenting the environmental and social impacts of the South African mining industry. This book was published to coincide with the travelling exhibition that opened at the Irma Stern Museum in August 2013.

Ilan Godfrey was born in Johannesburg in 1980. He has won numerous awards, including the International Photography Award, the Flash Forward Award, and the Nikon Endframe Award.

"The Black Photo Album/ Look at Me: 1890-1950" was originally published as a slide projection for the Johannesburg Biennale in 1997.

"'The Black Photo Album/ Look at Me: 1890-1950' is drawn from an ongoing research project. The project seeks to create an archive of images that black working and middle-class families commissioned during the period 1890-1950 and the stories about the subjects of the photographs." Santu Mofokeng

Photographer Santu Mokokeng was born in 1956 in Johannesburg, where he currently lives and works. He won the Ernest Cole Scholarship in 1991 and studies at the International Centre for Photography in New York. HE was the first Mother Jones Award winner for Africa in 1992. In 1998 he received the K┼▒nsthalle Worpswede Fellowship, and three years later of the DAAD Fellowship, both in Germany.
