"Art in Global Health" initiated by Wellcome Collection and curated by Danielle Olson, set up six six-month artist residences in six medical research centres around the world, one of which was South Africa. Zwelethu Mthethwa was in residence at the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies in Somkhele, KwaZulu-Natal. Like all the other artists, he was given a wide brief: to find out about the research being undertaken; to interact with scientists, team members from other disciplines and with involved communities; and to produce work in response to the processes of research and discovery he observed. This exhibition is the outcome of his residency.

Includes an interview with the artist conducted by curator Amanda Botha. Zwelethu Mthethwa also facilitated a three-day workshop at the Africa Centre to train artistically talented youth from the local community in the art of photography. A selection of their work was included in the exhibition.
