An account of the life and art of painter Nita Spilhaus by Peter Elliott, great-nephew of the artist.

Pauline Augusta Wilhelmina 'Nita' Spilhaus was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1878, and was raised by her grandfather in Lübeck, Germany, after losing both her parents. She moved to Cape Town in 1907, after studying drawing and etching in Lübeck, Munich and Paris. Her friends included many of the Cape Impressionists such as Ruth Prowse, Hugo Naudé and Florence Zerffi.
