The photographs in this book are drawn from two private collections. The first, the album of the Drummond and Fyvie families from the Natal Midlands, date mainly from 1910 to 1948. The second is the work of Ronald Mgilima and his son, Thorence, professional photographers who recorded life in the African, coloured and Indian neighbourhoods around Benoni, east of Johannesburg, in the 1950s and 1960s. These collections have formed the basis of an ongoing collaboration between Tamsyn Adams and Sophie Feyder, as part of a research project at the University of Leiden. Their first venture was an exhibition, "Sidetracks: working with two photographic collections", at the Market Photo Workshop Gallery in 2013.

Sophie Feyder was born in Brussels and grew up in New York and Luxemburg. She met Farrell Ngilima during her first fieldwork trip to Johannesburg in 2008. Their close collaboration on his grandfather’s photographic collection has been an important part of her PhD research at Leiden University.
Tamsyn Adams was born in Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa as a child. In 2009, she completed an MA in cultural studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and began her PhD at the University of Leiden the following year.

Schmahmann (B.) THE KEISKAMMA ART PROJECT, restoring hope and livelihoods

The Keiskamma Art Project, started by Carol Hofmeyer in 2000, provides work to over 130 people from Hamburg and the surrounding rural villages in the Eastern Cape. They make embroidered, beaded and appliquéd handbags, cushion covers, quilts, linen and tapestries, and have also produced a number of large artworks. The 126 metre Keiskamma Tapestry, which records the history of the Eastern Cape, now hangs permanently in the Parliament Building in Cape Town.
