Clarke (J.) THE PAINTED STONE GARDEN OF NUKAIN MABUZA,
54pp., oblong 4to., b/w & colour illus., paperback, Pretoria, 2013. R280
Farm-worker artist Nukain Mabuza created a ‘garden’ of painted rocks at Revolver Creek, a small rural community between Barberton and Kaapmuiden in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga. Rocks and large boulders on the hillside around his home were painted with brightly coloured geometric patterns and outlines of animals. Since his death in 1981 the garden has been neglected, the paint has faded and peeled and very little of the "Garden of Flowers" (as Mabuza called it) is left.

Pretoria-based artist JFC Clarke took a series of photographs of the site in the 1980s after Mabuza’s death and interviewed the farmer who owned the farm where the rock garden was situated as well as Mabuza's’s co-workers and friends. He is the author of The Home of Nukain Mabuza (2001). The Painted Stone Garden of Nukain Mabuza is based on research done after 2001.
