Political journalist S'thembiso Msomi examines how and why Mmusi Maimane rose rapidly to become leader of the opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), in 2015. Msomi discusses Maimane’s childhood and family, his early involvement in the Church, and assesses his first year as head of the DA in the run-up to the local government elections.

John Solilo (1864-1940) submitted many letters and articles, as well as many poems, to Xhosa-language newspapers. His major literary contribution was his collection of poems, "Izala" (A Rubbish Dump), published in 1925. In this book the 65 poems from "Izala", as well as 28 poems previously published in newspapers, have been reprinted.

Jeff Opland is the author of "Xhosa Oral Poetry" (1983) and "Xhosa Poets and Poetry" (1998). He has also edited and translated Xhosa works by Nontsizi Mgqwetho and S.E.K.Mqhayi. An account of his long association with Yali-Manisi, "The Dassie and the Hunter", was published in 2005.

Peter Mtuze has written novels, short stories, essays. drama, poetry, autobiographies and language books in isiXhosa. He translated Nelson Mandela's autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom", into isiXhosa. He also worked on the University of Fort Hare Xhosa Dictionary Project. He is Professor Emeritus at Rhodes University.
