Serge Alain Nitegeka was born in 1983 in Burundi. He now lives and works in Johannesburg. He was awarded the 2008 Robert Hodgins Prize and the 2010 Tollman Award for Visual Arts. He also received Postgraduate Merit Awards at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2010 and 2012.
