Constance Stuart Larrabee was born in the U.K. and grew up in South Africa. She studied photography in London and Munich. She returned to South Africa in 1936 and opened a portrait studio and took on photojournalism projects. She travelled through South Africa photographing the Ndebele, Xhosa, Sotho and San, townships, streets of Johannesburg, mines and poor whites. From 1944 to 1945 she worked as a war photographer in Egypt, France and Italy. On her return to South Africa she worked with Alan Paton, photographing locations from his book "Cry the Beloved Country", was the official photographer for the Royal Visit to Basutoland, Swaziland and Bechuanaland and made a series of photographs on the Nagmaal in Bronkhorstspruit. In 1949 she moved to the United States where she lived and continued to take photographs until her death.
