Novel set at the Cape of Good Hope in the early 1830s. When Sangora van Java, a "Mohametan" slave, is bought by wine farmer Andries de Villiers, together with his 16-year-old stepdaughter, Somiela, they are separated from the girl's mother. Harman Kloot, an Afrikaner of mixed blood, arrives on the farm from the interior, bonds with the slave community, and falls in love with Somiela.

Rayda Jacobs is the author of the novel Eyes of the Sky (1996), winner of the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Fiction. Her novel, Confessions of a Gambler (2003), received The Sunday Times Fiction Prize and the Herman Charles Bosman Prize, was has been adapted for film. She has also produced and directed documentaries for television, including God Has Many Names and Portrait of Muslim Women.
