Kally Forrest records the achievements of the inhabitants of Oukasie, a township in the Madibeng Municipality in North West Province, who successfully fought against forced removals and appalling living conditions in the 1980s and 1990s. She goes on to describe the problems faced by the community post-1994.

Kally Forrest is currently a senior researcher at the Society, Work & Politics Institute (SWOP), University of the Witwatersrand, where she is working on a Coal Mining and Water project. Prior to this research she was editor of the South African Labour Bulletin.
