South African cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001) performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant operation at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on December 3rd, 1967.
David Cooper was present at the first heart transplant in the UK in 1968 and a member of the surgical team that established heart transplantation in the UK in 1979. Later he worked in Chris Barnard's Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Cape Town. He is the author of several books on organ transplantation.
