Afrikaans novelist F.A. Venter (1916-1997) on his school years in the Karoo, before he left to study at Stellenbosch University. In 1982 he was awarded the ruitertrofee by the Suid-Afrikaanse Federasie van Rapportryerskorpse for this memoir.
F.A. Venter was awarded the Hertzog prize for his novels Swart Pelgrim and Geknelde Land in 1976 and received the Andrew Murray Prize for Literature in 1996.
