Kwame Brathwaite was born in 1938 in Brooklyn, New York. In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Brathwaite used photography to popularize the political slogan “Black Is Beautiful.” Inspired by the writings of Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite and his brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios, a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers. They also founded Grandassa Models, a modeling agency for black women that challenged white beauty standards.
