Lerato Shadi was born in the village of Lotlhakane in Mahikeng, Northwest Province, South Africa. She completed a BFA in Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg. In 2010 she was awarded a Pro Helvetia residency in Bern, Switzerland. In 2012 her work featured at the Dak'art Biennale and in the lll Moscow International Biennale. She is a fellow of Sommerakademie 2013, and in 2014 her performance, "Makhubu", was showcased at Iniva in London. In the same year she was awarded the mart stam studio grant, Berlin, and is currently completing her MFA at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee.
