Private Robert Hart of the Argyllshire Highlanders arrived at the Cape in 1795. He was involved in the first taking of the Cape, the uprising in Graaff-Reinet, the arrival of the 1820 Settlers and the Frontier Wars. He served as adjutant of the Cape Regiment, chose the site where Makhanda now stands and managed the farm, Glen Lynden in the Eastern Cape which supplied produce to the British troops
