Journalist, academic and political activist Ruth First was a member of the underground South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. She was one of the 156 defendants in the 1956 Treason Trial and was imprisoned without charge in solitary confinement for 117 days in 1963. On 17 August 1982 she was killed by a parcel bomb while living in exile in Mozambique.
