A photographic portrait of South African stylist Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, his play with common role models and the search for his true self.

The photographs were made in Summer Green and on Signal Hill during Jana Schulz's two visits to Cape Town between February and July 2024. She first encountered Bathenkosi at Broke Klubhouse, where he stood out from the crowd in an orange jumpsuit.

Jana Schulz (b. 1984) lives and works in Berlin and specialises in intimate video, photography and sound installations that explore masculinity, vulnerability and human connection. She initiates encounters with men previously unknown to her, in which intimacy emerges in the process of shooting.
