Pat Gibbs discusses how the area around Molteno in the Stormberg mountains of the north eastern Cape Colony - a region inhabited by mainly Afrikaner stock farmers, a few English wool farmers, and a few Thembu, Khoi, Sotho and Xhosa sharecroppers and labourers - was transformed by the arrival of mining and merchant capitalists, bankers and financiers, skilled overseas miners and Thembu labourers, drawn to the region by the coal mines.
