The first Jewish residents arrived in Potchefstroom in 1878, drawn by reports of gold. A Jewish cemetery was established in 1892. Over the years the Jewish community shrank and the last service for the Potchefstroom Hebrew Congregation was held in 2000, after which the synagogue was deconsecrated. In 2019 there were six Jewish people living in the town.
