A study of the ANC in exile in Zambia, where the organisation had its headquarters for twenty years. MacMillan compares the urban culture of the ANC in Zambia with its camp-based culture in Angola and examines the influence of the Zambian experience on the ANC's approach to the transition to democracy and to its practice in government.

Historian Hugh MacMillan is currently a research associate at Oxford University's African Studies Centre.
