In 1990 a group of University of Cambridge scientists found the wing of an unidentified bird in Ethiopia, and a new species of bird was named: Nechisar Nightjar. Architect and environmentalist Vernon Head was born in 1967 in Cape Town. He is also the author of the non-fiction title Featherlings, true stories in search of birds, the novels A Tree for the birds and On That Wave of Gulls, (winner of the 2024 Cultural and Creative Industry Award), and the poetry collection The Laughing Dove and other poems.
