Turiya Magadlela was born in Soweto in 1978. She won the FNB Art Prize in 2015 and lives in Johannesburg. She works primarily with fabrics, to create abstract compositions by cutting, stitching, folding and stretching these materials across wooden frames. She has used "kaffersheet", a fabric traditionally worn by Xhosa traditional leaders, and in her latest exhibition, uses pantyhose.
