South African writer and academic Carien Smith is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield researching the social epistemology of climate change. She has been awarded the JIAS Writing Fellowship for 2020, and in 2019 she was awarded the Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Award. In 2015 she received an Afrikoon from the ATKV for her contribution to Afrikaans literature and the arts.
