As a child the author sat at the fire with his great-grandmother, Mieta 'Ogies' Witbooi, and listened to her tell some of these stories, which he combines with his own research.

Obie Phillips was born in Niekerkshoop, a village near Prieska, Northern Cape Province. He studied Afrikaans and theology at the University of the Western Cape and is a minister in the United Reformed Church.
