The Black Sash, supported by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies, successfully filed an urgent application with the South African Constitutional Court in March 2017, when it became apparent that the South African Social Security Agency would be unable to pay social grants to 17 million beneficiaries on 1 April 2017.

The Black Sash began in 1955 as a non-violent campaign of white women protesting against the removal of people classified Coloured from the voters role. Over decades it has evolved into an organisation focused on human rights.
