A collection of essays on pioneering Nigerian photographer Jonathan Adagogo Green. Green was born in Bonny along the Niger Delta (present day Rivers State) in 1873, studied photography in Sierra Leone, and established a studio in Bonny. His work included portraiture, scenes of daily and ritual life, especially in his Ibani Ijo community, commerce and building. He died in 1905 at the age of 32. The book includes 150 of his images, uncovered in archives, publications and albums that celebrated colonial achievements.

Martha G. Anderson is Professor Emeritia of the School of Art and Design at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University.

Lisa Aronson is Emeritus Professor of the Department of Art History at Skidmore College.
