Poet, novelist, essayist, anti-apartheid activist and visual artist Breyten Breytenbach is currently a Global Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at New York University. He has had solo exhibitions of his artwork in cities around the world including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris, Brussels and Edinburgh.

His non-fiction work includes four volumes of memoir: A Season in Paradise (1973), The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist (1983), Return to Paradise (1991), and Dog Heart (1999). He won the 1994 Alan Paton Award for Return to Paradise, the 1999 Hertzog Prize for Poetry for Papierblom, and the 2008 Hertzog Prize and the University of Johannesburg Prize for the poetry collection, Die Windvanger.
