Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi was born in 1943 in the Hammanskraal area of what was then the Northern Transvaal. Forced to leave school early, she earned her living as a domestic worker in Johannesburg. From 1970-1973 she studied at John Koenakeefe Mohl's White Studio in Sophiatown and later at the Katlehong Arts Centre near Germiston, where she began teaching in 1985. Between 1986 and 1988 she worked for the Johannesburg Art Foundation while teaching at the Alexandra Art Centre. In 1985 she had her first solo exhibition at FUBA, where she met Bill Ainslie. In 1989 she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and studied at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, USA. That same year she won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in South Africa.
