A monograph on Cape Town artist Lionel Davis, published on the occasion of "Gathering Strands", Davis' retrospective exhibition at the Iziko South African National Gallery.

Includes contributions by Premesh Lalu, Elisabeth Rankin and Philippa Hobbs, Thembinkosi Goniwe, Bridget Thompson, Lionel Davis, amongst others.

Lionel Davis was born in District Six in 1936. A member of the National Liberation Front, he was arrested in 1964 and sentenced to seven years on Robben Island for conspiring to commit acts of sabotage. After his release, he was placed under house arrest for five years. He studied art at the Community Arts Project (CAP) and the Evangelical Art and Craft Centre at Rorke’s Drift and completed a MA in Fine Art with the University of Cape Town. He has taught at the Community Arts Project (CAP), participated in the Triangle Workshop in New York City and the Thupelo Workshop in Johannesburg, worked as a part-time art educator at the South African National Art Gallery abd as educational coordinator for the Robben Island Museum.
