South African writer, academic and anti-apartheid activist Fatima Meer (1928-2010) was one of the founding members of the Federation of South African Women. She was on the staff of the University of Natal from 1956 to 1988. Her books include Portrait of Indian South AfricansRace and Suicide in South AfricaDocuments of Indentured LabourResistance in the Townships and Higher than Hope, the first authorized biography of Nelson Mandela.

Rajendra Chetty teaches at the University of the Western Cape. His books include Trauma, Resistance, Reconstruction in Post-1994 South African Writing, Narrating the New Nation and At the Edge: the writings of Ronnie Govender.
