Bulelwa Mabasa was born in Meadowlands, Soweto, at the height of apartheid. Her grandparents endured land dispossession under the Group Areas Act and the migrant labour system. She studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand, focusing on the land question in her postgraduate studies. She set up and lead a practice centred on land reform, restitution and tenure at Werksman Attorneys. In 2018 she was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the only attorney on the Presidential Expert Advisory Panel on Land Reform and Agriculture. She is co-editor of Land in South Africa: Contested Meanings and nation formation (2021).

"I was ensconced in this memoir until its beautiful ending. Bulelwa shares many different parts of her life, including her enabling role on the critical issue of land restitution." Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, CEO of Naspers South Africa

"Bulelwa successfully navigates the worlds of township, rural heritage, suburban life and the courtroom with great authenticity. She is a crucial voice pushing for continuing transformation." Nolitha Fakude, Group Director of Anglo American South Africa and author of Boardroom Dancing
