Journalist and travel writer Dana Snyman on his experiences in the 1980s, the time of PW Botha, Voëlvry, AWB rallies, and compulsory military service. He was dishonourably discharged from the SADF after spending time in a psychiatric ward. Medicated and aimless, he lived in a small room in Pretoria, before being supported to study journalism.

Dana Snyman was born in 1963 in Stellenbosch and grew up in various places in South Africa and Namibia. He worked as a security guard, switchboard operator and bookstore clerk before qualifying as a journalist. His books include Die Binneland In, In die Tyd van die Gif, Onder Een Dak, Soekmekaar, Op Pad and In die Blou Kamp.  He has also produced his own TV series, Op pad met Dana and Grondpad Geloof.
