Ronnie Kasrils (b.1938) on his involvement with the South African Communist Party and the underground resistance within South Africa in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was a commander in Umkhonto we Sizwe from its inception in 1961 until 1990. On his return to South Africa he took up a position on the National Executive Committee, and was Deputy Minister of Defence (1994-1999), Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry (1999-2004) and Minister of Intelligence Services, a position he held from 2004 until his resignation in 2008 following the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki.
