South African tennis player Davy Samaai was born in Paarl in 1927. He retained the SA singles championship for 21 years and won the SA double championship several times with partner Ossie Woodman. In 1949 he was the first black South African to play at Wimbledon. He also played at the French Open, the Swiss Open and the German Open. He became Vice-chairperson of the SA Tennis Association in 1999. In the same year he received the Presidential Sports Award for lifetime achievements in tennis. He died in 2019.
