Dirk Ligter was born around 1860 in the Tankwa-Karoo and worked as a farm labourer. He became known as the Robin Hood of the Tankwa because he stole and slaughtered sheep from farmers and distributed the meat among the farm hands, keeping a portion for himself. Most of what is known about him, based on farmers' accounts, appears in fictionalised form in Boplaas by Boerneef.
