Memoir by Esau Ralitsela (b. 1951), a community leader in the Vaal Triangle during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Deputy Chairman of the Vaal Civic Association, he was involved in the 1984 Vaal rent boycott and uprising before going into exile in Botswana later that year. A member of an underground unit of the ANC, he underwent military training in ANC camps in Angola in 1986 and in 1988 was sent for political training in Bulgaria. He returned to South Africa in 1991 and worked for the ANC in various capacities. He is currently Chairperson of the Vaal Heritage Foundation.
