In 1996, when she was twenty two years old, Adolphine Misekabu was forced to flee her home in war-torn Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). She walked thousands of kilometres across Southern Africa with her sixteen-month-old baby and her five-year-old brother, to be reunited with her husband Sepano in Cape Town in 1998.

Estelle Neethling met Adolphine Misekabu in 2004 while working in Cape Town as National Tracing Coordinator (Restoring of Family Links Programme, International Committee of the Red Cross).
