Wetsho-otsile Joseph Seremane (b. 1938) was a political prisoner on Robben Island (1963-1969), before being deported by the apartheid government to what was then the homeland of Bophuthatswana. He was detained without trial several times between 1976 and 1984.
Formerly a member of Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), in 1994 Seremane joined the Democratic Party (DP), predecessor to the Democratic Alliance (DA), and was elected MP in 1998. In March 2000 he was elected Federal Chairperson of the DP, and subsequently became the founding Chairperson of the DA. He was the DA's candidate for President in the 2008 parliamentary vote to elect a successor to President Thabo Mbeki. He retired in 2010.
