British journalist, academic and author RW Johnson (b. 1943) writes about his life in Africa - his school years in Durban, his years at the University of Natal and Oxford University, a research trip to newly independent Guinea and his time as director of the Helen Suzman Foundation - and discusses the events that influenced his intellectual worldview.

RW Johnson was a fellow in politics at Magdalen College, Oxford, for 26 years, and remains an emeritus fellow.  He is the author of 15 books, including How Long Will South Africa Survive? the crisis continues, The African University? The critical case of South Africa and the tragedy at the UKZN and South Africa's Brave New World: the beloved country since the end of apartheid. He is currently a South Africa correspondent for the London Sunday Times and writes for the London Review of Books. He lives in Cape Town.
