Juby Mayet, (1937–2019) was born in Johannesburg. She started working as a writer at the Golden City Post, moved to Drum, and joined The Voice in 1977. She was a founding member of the Union of Black Journalists and a member of the Writer’s Association of South Africa. She was detained in 1979 and was subsequently served with a five-year banning order.

Susanne M. Klausen is the Julia Grigg Brill Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at The Pennsylvania State University and Senior Research Associate in the Department of History at the University of Johannesburg.
