On 22nd June 1974 Dugald Macdonald played eighth man for the Springboks in the second rugby test match against the British Lions. The Lions scored five tries to beat the South Africans 28-9 at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria. The Springboks had never lost to the Lions before.

Macdonald's own experience of the game is interwoven wth the commentaries of Gerhard Viviers, Kim Shippey and Alun Williams.

"By far the most entertaining and amusing South African rugby book ever written. Except, it is far more than a rugby book." John Dobson, South African rugby union coach

"Macdonald uses a Lions test match to question the perceived reality of rugby and of life itself. Written with self-effacing humility and idiosyncratic humour. A great read." Nick Mallett, South African rugby union player

Dugald Macdonald played rugby for Western Province from 1972-1974 and was capped for the Springboks against the British Lions in 1974. He continued playing rugby in Italy, for Oxford University, and for Stade Toulousain, France. He lives in Cape Town.
