Jacobus Petrus Duminy (1897-1980) was the first alumnus of the University of Cape Town to become Vice Chancellor (1958–1967) and the first non-American to be elected a First Vice-president of Rotary International. He also played cricket for South Africa (1927-1929). Drawing from diaries and private papers in the family’s possession, his son Andrew writes about his life and career.

Andrew Duminy is Professor Emeritus at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is the author of François Renier Duminy: French mariner and South African pioneer, 1747-1811 and Mapping South Africa: a historical survey of South African maps and charts.
