First published in 1939 as A Pioneer Looks Back.

Born in Cape Town in 1860, James Benjamin Taylor travelled to Kimberley after the discovery of diamonds and from Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton to the Rand after the discovery of gold. He dealt with President Paul Kruger on behalf of the mining houses, left South Africa for Britain before the Jameson Raid and the Anglo-Boer War, and returned to Cape Town after World War I, where he became a regular companion of Deneys Reitz. He died in 1944.
