Born in Cape Town, she left apartheid South Africa in 1967 aged 23, settled in the United States and became active in the anti-apartheid and solidarity movements. She has worked as a gender specialist and advisor on Gender HIV/AIDS for the United Nations. She is the author of "And Still They Dance: women, war, and the struggle for change in Mozambique".
