Mianke van den Hever was born with Down syndrome. She lives with her family on the farm Beestekuil near Hanover and has a special bond with animals, especially horses. Her father told journalist Jan Bezuidenhout that Mianke had wanted to write a book from an early age, but couldn't read or write, and asked if he could help make that dream come true. Mianke related told her story to Bezuidenhout and he put it in writing.
