Biography of Phoebe Abrahams, widow of South African academic and anti-apartheid activist Jakes Gerwel (1946-2012). Jakes Gerwel lectured at the University of the Western Cape, where he was Vice-Chancellor and Rector from 1978 to 1994. After the first democratic elections he left academia to serve as Director-General of the Presidency under Nelson Mandela, before chairing the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Mandela Rhodes Foundation

Journalist and writer Rachelle Greeff has published short story collections, novels, collections of essays and children's picture books. She is also the author of the plays The Sewing Machine (2010 Fleur de Cap Award for Best Indigenous Text) and Rondomskrik. Her first novel, The Back of the Bride, won the 1991 CNA prize. In 2002 she received the RAU prize for Creative Writing for her short story collection Marks of the Night.
