Anti-apartheid activist, public servant and government communicator Ronnie Mampoepa grew up in Atteridgeville. Arrested at the age of 19 on the charge of conspiracy to overthrow the state, he spent five years on Robben Island. In 1990 he was in the media team of the National Reception Committee. Later, he served as Director of the Information and Publicity Unit of the ANC and as Spokesperson to President Thabo Mbeki, then Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and then Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. He died in 2017.
