Johnny Clegg was born in England in 1953 and grew up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Together with Sipho Mchunu, Clegg formed the multiracial band Juluka. The 1979 hit song, "Scatterlings of Africa", launched their international career. The group disbanded in 1985 when Mchunu chose to retire from music and return to the family farm. In 1986, Clegg formed Savuka with musicians who had worked with Juluka, and produced the now famous songs "Asimbonanga", "Great Heart", "Third World Child and "The Crossing", a tribute to Savuka percussionist Dudu Zulu, killed in 1992. Clegg died on 16 July 2019.
